Ketamine vs Mushrooms. What’s the Difference and Why are Psychedelic Treatments Emerging Now?

Psilocybin (mushrooms) is the stuff of legends: experiences that create out-of-body sensations and distorted sensations of time and space. But despite the fact that psilocybin is still considered an illegal substance by the DEA, it is on a fast track to treating a host of mental health problems with controlled doses. A hallmark of the mushroom use experience is how it helps probe people’s experiences with their natural realm.

Ketamine, another drug that has long been approved by the FDA, has also been used to treat depression, anxiety and other disorders. For people with depression that is not responsive to traditional antidepression medication, Ketamine in various forms has proven to significantly alleviate their symptoms in a short period of time.

Ketamine versus Mushrooms: Some differences

Newly designated by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Breakthrough Therapy that beneficially address an irreversible morbidity or mortality (IMM), psilocybin acts specifically on the 5H2A serotonin receptor in the brain. At present, it is being evaluated for its potential to benefit people who suffer from major depressive disorder and other mental health problems.

By potentially altering glutamate levels in the brain, psilocybin can promote a dissolution of the ego and a sense of alignment with the natural world. With a full psilocybin experience, a host of other sensations/experiences may be present, including space/time distortions, visions and a noetic (truer) sense of reality.

How is Ketamine Different from Psilocybin?

In contrast to Psilocybin, Ketamine is a legal drug that can be administered by a licensed practitioner in a clinical setting. While Ketamine can potentially induce a dissociative state similar to that of psylocibin, this effect is not produced as reliably.

Ketamine experiences tend to be shorter—approximately 90 minutes compared to about 6 hours for psylocibin—and can be administered in IV or nasal spray form.
