Elon Musk Microdoses Ketamine Daily For Depression Treatment, According to Reports

Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, has reportedly been using microdoses of ketamine, a drug he advocates as a superior alternative to antidepressants for occasional use. Musk, 52, has been open about his mental health struggles in the past, hinting in a 2017 tweet at the possibility of having bipolar disorder, which he described as experiencing “extreme highs, intense lows, and constant stress”.

People close to Musk have reportedly witnessed him using ketamine in small quantities, as per a recent article by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). Following this report, Musk tweeted about his perspective on depression, suggesting that it’s overdiagnosed in the US, yet recognizing it as a “brain chemistry issue” for some. He expressed concern about the overuse of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a common type of antidepressant, which he believes tends to “zombify” people.

Musk considers ketamine, based on his observations among friends, to be a better choice when used sparingly. No comment has been provided yet from Musk or his representatives following the WSJ report.

In the past, when asked about his mental health during a Twitter Q&A, Musk stated, “The truth is, there are intense highs, profound lows, and persistent stress. I don’t think people are keen to hear about the latter two.” He responded affirmatively when asked if he might be bipolar.

Bipolar disorder, according to the NHS, is typified by severe mood swings, fluctuating between mania and depression, and can be managed using various treatments, including medication to control and stabilize these episodes.

Musk later nuanced his statement, suggesting that he might not be “medically” bipolar and attributed his negative feelings to adverse events, speculating that the real issue could be overcommitment.

Microdosing involves the intake of small amounts of typically psychedelic or sub-hallucinogenic substances like LSD or psilocybin mushrooms. Ketamine is a US-approved drug for the treatment of severe depression resistant to other therapies.

In 2019, a ketamine-like drug, esketamine, Spravato which is administered as a nasal spray, was approved in the US by the FDA for the treatment of severe depression.
